Blog Post #12 - Magazine Research
Magazines are often used in the film world as a way of advertising for production. This is because it is a way of visually displaying the content in text and photos that is still popular in the modern world as compared to newspapers. Magazines also have a lasting effect on society since they are so easily accessible. Stands on the street, on websites, or even in grocery store lines, they are all around us and create anticipation around films and any type of content they advertise.
Next, I wanted to learn what I should include in this. For this, I decided to look at and read some film magazines to gain inspiration. The examples magazines I found were "Empire," "Entertainment Weekly," and "Filmmaker." The one above comes from a recent Spiderman movie and was in the "Hollywood Spotlight." Beyond just reading this magazine, I wanted to look at it as a whole to gain inspiration for the layout, fonts, and the small details that bring it all together and make it more enticing.
Some things I noticed about this were the abundance but balance of texts and images. There is a lot of both but neither one overpowers the other. The colors scheme was notable as well since the blue and red can be considered 'Spiderman'/Superhero type of colors which was done intentionally for mise en scéne. Lastly, I could see small conventions throughout the layout that help signify that it is a magazine, for example the page number, photo captions, subheadings, and quotations. I plan to include these types of small details to make it as interesting and desirable.
