Blog Post #7 - Helpful Articles

Continuing with my research, I went on after viewing documentaries to read 3 articles on filming athletics. I chose to do this as it would provide me with tips and ideas of how to put together shots in my documentary without losing focus and attention from the audience. I especially wanted to do this after filming my preliminary exercise to figure out where to add more detail and fix my mistakes.

The first article I read came from the website Documentary Film Academy and was centered specifically on filming action sports videos. The main topics of the article was developing a strong narrative, composition and framing, camera techniques, lighting, audio, pacing, and score. My main takeaways from this were mostly small added on and specific details to my current film knowledge. The article was very focused on creating immersive and entertaining experience which is my goal with my documentary. It also explained to me how important editing will be to do this to create pacing and rhythm that is exciting which I will ensure that I incorporate into my process and planning.

My next article was much more narrative focused. This one I found very beneficial as I mentioned before that I want to develop a story, not just showcase athletes but their lives and their stories as well. This article included explanations on how I should go about planning and developing the story by creating connections with the athletes and team so they are comfortable with me whilst interviewing and filming them. Not only this, but it included information about how to go about research which I will put to use during this phase of my project. Lastly, the article focused on cinematography by including camera angles and their effects when being used in this way which will help me whilst filming as I can deliberately chose what I am filming and why I am doing it using that tactic.

This last article was also very helpful in making intentional decisions when filming for my documentary. Its main points concerned conveying emotion and filming with intention. It has ben my goal from the beginning to keep audience attention and entertainment which will best be done through emotive language so, this specific article gives a great explanation on strategies to doing this and achieving my goal. Filming with intention was also named in the last article but this one goes more in depth concerning it and significantly taught me the necessity behind always doing this for the project because each cut cannot be just a random clip but it must have purpose and reasoning behind it.
