Blog Post #18 - Locations To Film In
Filming locations are vital to any type of visual media content. This is because it determines the entire appearance of the content and can completely alter every aspect of it. The significance of a location makes choosing it very difficult as it makes or breaks the end results. So, to determine my locations and settings, I chose to focus on how it will contribute the the development of meaning in my project.
There are 3 primary filming locations I will need to obtain, including for practicing content, game content, and interviewing content. Since my documentary excerpt is volleyball based, the best settings for me to use will be volleyball courts and gyms. But, the most difficult thing to determine is how to use the locations, which to use, and how to improve them to maximize their effects on my documentary.
The first location is the practicing content. For this location, I chose to use the Elevate Volleyball Gym in Tarpon Springs, Florida as this is the most natural and comfortable place for the players and athletes. Here, there are two different court sides where I can choose to film from with many opportunities for different camera movements and angles. The only negative to this is slightly dim lighting. To rectify this, I can use a key light and connect it to my filming device to brighten the clips and I can also alter this during the editing phase of my project to ensure the location is bright and clear.

The second location is the interview content. This location will also be in the same gym to keep the documentaries focus on the club itself but the interviews will be done from near the doorway to enter the gym. This allows me to use the lobby lights as a way of front lighting and use the background of the players on the court as a way to create a background related to the interviews. By placing my subject on the left vertical line of the rule of thirds, the interview will be aesthetically pleasing to the eye of the audience and adding a shallow focus to keep their focus while also creating something entertaining as well as interesting.
The third location is the game content. This filming location will be at the Savannah Convention Center in Savannah, Georgia, and JJVA Volleyball Club in Jacksonville, Florida. These locations were selected as they are the locations of the teams next tournaments. These locations are brightly lit and the seating typically offers close perspectives of the teams playing, allowing me to get clear, good shots during their game play.
