Blog Post #21 - Industry Research
The media industry concerns the business side of production, distribution, exhibition, and retailing of media products. It is extremely versatile now considering the modernization of technology, allowing for the creation of countless media products that revolutionized the industry. Because of this, I chose to research the documentary industry and look for information that will help the planning and production portion of my process.
Documentaries are on the rise right now as more are becoming pop culture and direct interest focused. This way, more people can find content pertaining to their direct interests and wants which encourages them to view the documentary as it can often be difficult to be able to access concepts too niche for mass production. Although, documentaries make this easier as there is something for everyone.
Often times, a documentary has a fraction of the budget that a large film may have, typically indicating it will not be as well produced as a blockbuster would be. It also makes production more difficult since there is little to no wiggle-room, causing less viewers as many individuals will not watch content that is of 'lower quality.' This is the reasoning as to why documentaries are considered less popular but with the newfound appreciation for documentaries, funding as increased, allowing for better content to be created.
This applies to my documentary as I want to maximize viewers on a low budget which is difficult on the documentary side of the media industry. As this industry grows, production companies have to adjust to the wants of their audiences. So, I will be doing a survey during my planning phase to see what my audience is looking for in my documentary.
